John Cole

“To reflect theologically on mission experience” was the first line of  the job description when I was appointed as St Hugh’s Missioner in Lincoln Diocese in 1986. Before then I  had been Communications Officer in Blackburn Diocese for eleven years. Earlier appointments were a  curacy at Leeds Parish Church and five years as priest-in-charge in Alwoodley, Leeds. During that time I  was in a small team making programmes on behalf of Leeds Churches on the newly-opened BBC Radio  Leeds. In 1997 I was invited to serve all the major Churches in Lincolnshire as their ‘Development Officer for  Mission and Unity’. In 2003 this led to my appointment as ‘National Adviser (Unity in Mission)’ for the  General Synod’s Council for Christian Unity. I retired in 2008, joining the editorial team and writing papers  for Parish and People until the project was wound up in 2013. Kevin Mayhew published my workbook “How  to be a Local Church” in 1992 and in 2002 I prepared a short study guide for the Anglican-Methodist  Covenant entitled “A Church Shaped for Mission”. A selection of Parish and People publications can be  accessed under “Resources” on the National Deaneries Network website (www.nationaldeaneries.net)
